- The morningstar family are mages. The heads of the family from each generation have all been considered high quality, but a running defect in their bloodline dooms their heirs to premature aging and shorter than average lifespans.
- Hikaru is the current heir. She's valued by her family for her talent, carrying on their lineage of top quality mages, but considered strange due to her outgoing personality putting her at odds with the rest of the family's insular nature.
- The secret to their family's success began a long time ago, in a layer of reality parallel to this one.
- The Demon King Lucifer, who ruled over the Expanse and its demonic populace, was imprisoned within the furthest depths of the expanse by God, his body frozen to damn him to an eternity of solitude.
- With no means of escape, Lucifer managed to pull together all of his power to send a sliver of his existence into Earth, where it was doomed to wither away with nothing to anchor it.
- It managed to find a host in the form of a simple mage, falling dormant within their body. With each generation, the sliver of Lucifer's existence passed itself down from parent to child, taking a portion of their lifespan with it to empower itself.
- Although his presence granted each head of the family their latent talent, it also resulted in the "defect" in their bloodline that lead to their early deaths.
- Upon passing down to Hikaru, the dormant part of Lucifer awoke within her body. Her existence was overwritten, giving Lucifer total control of her existence.

- As an aside, despite identifying as Lucifer and his enemy as God, neither Lucifer nor God are the actual figures humanity knows of. They're simply close approximations of the actual existences, allowing humans to perceive them in a simpler fashion. The expanse is also a close approximation of hell and its subjects your average demon, but they predate the actual religious stories as humans know them.
